The boom in domestic tourism and rising fuel prices are driving interest in car-sharing as a way to cut the cost of summer journeys.
Thousands of people are looking for ways to save on summer trips without giving up comfort. According to ObservaTUR, 65% of those who have already decided on their holiday plans will travel within Spain, while the CIS reports that six in ten Spaniards choose a village as their holiday destination.
With fuel and toll costs rising, car-sharing makes use of empty seats and lets travellers split expenses. “Every summer we see growing interest in car-sharing, particularly for trips to the village or longer journeys,” says Paulo Gómez, co-founder and CEO of Waiis.
How much can you save by car-sharing?
Waiis has added a one-off journey feature, allowing drivers and passengers to share occasional trips and split the cost of travelling.
According to Paulo Gómez, sharing a vehicle can cut the cost of a journey by up to 50% in some cases. More generally, this option can reduce the cost per trip by 30% to 60% by splitting fuel, tolls and parking costs.
How to plan a shared journey
Waiis recommends confirming the meeting and drop-off points in the app, agreeing timings and luggage in advance, and keeping communication between users clear.
The platform offers identity verification, chat between passengers and drivers, and real-time location tracking to help coordinate the journey.
