As the university year begins, car sharing is gaining ground as a way to cut travel costs. An analysis by WAIIS, based on 20,000 recurring routes travelled by 2,000 student drivers in Spain, estimates that driving alone to university costs an average of €830 per academic year.
According to the study by the startup specialising in smart shared mobility, sharing a car can reduce the cost of each journey by between 30% and 60% by splitting expenses such as fuel, parking and tolls.
The analysis also finds that drivers travel an average of 20 kilometres to reach campus. For students, who are used to mobile apps, shared mobility offers a simple and flexible option for getting around.
With the challenges of relying solely on public transport and the rise in costs associated with the new academic year, car sharing is emerging as a money-saving option that is becoming increasingly popular among university students.
