Waiis was founded in 2022 to offer an alternative to overcrowded public transport and reduce the number of vehicles carrying just one person. Founded by Paulo Gómez and Sara Jiménez, the platform is based in Manresa and has an office in Zaragoza.
The app uses artificial intelligence, proprietary algorithms and analysis of mobility patterns to connect people who make similar journeys. The service brings together private drivers, taxis, VTC vehicles and partnerships with public transport operators.
After launching pilot projects with businesses in late 2024, Waiis has also recently begun operating a model aimed at end consumers. The company has closed a €1 million funding round to accelerate its development and nationwide expansion, with the aim of reaching 100,000 active users during 2026.
How it works
Waiis is based on carpooling, a system in which several people share a vehicle for a journey they have in common. Its artificial intelligence, GeoIA, learns users’ mobility patterns and identifies compatible routes to connect them automatically.
The platform provides real-time information about the driver and journey, as well as services for long-distance travel, leisure trips and scheduled journeys. It also lets users arrange women-only journeys and includes verified profiles and ratings.
Close to public transport
Waiis operates a not-for-profit model in which drivers cannot make a profit from transporting other people, and positions the service as a complement to public transport.
The ATM has contacted the company to prepare a pilot project due to start at the end of the year. The plan is to integrate car sharing into the public transport network to cover the first or last leg of journeys.
Waiis also incorporates taxi and VTC services, with more than 3,000 vehicles connected between Barcelona and Madrid, and expects to launch shared taxis before the end of the year. It also applies rebates linked to incentives under the Energy Savings Certificate scheme.
